Fisheries Conflict Research

Secure Fisheries’ research into fisheries conflict seeks to better understand what factors contribute to fisheries conflict around the Horn of Africa and what steps can be taken to mitigate the risks of such conflict. In 2018, we began the Fisheries Conflict Database, a collection of reported incidents in which a fisheries resource is contested, disputed, or the source of conflict. The fisheries conflict team has documented fisheries dispute events from Tanzania, Kenya, the Somali region, Djibouti, Eritrea, and Yemen. These events help us investigate the causes and consequences of fisheries conflict in the region in order to better understand the relationship between fisheries and violent conflict.

Two reports have been released summarizing our findings in Tanzania and in the Somali region.

A cross-national analysis is forthcoming.
