On September 19-21, 2016, Paige Roberts of Secure fisheries attended the Somaliland Investment Forum in Hargeisa. The forum was hosted by Shuraako, a sister program to Secure Fisheries under One Earth Future. It brought together business owners, financial institutions, donors, and policymakers for discussions, workshops, and networking about the opportunities for economic growth in Somaliland.
As a developing sector of the economy, fisheries is of increasing importance to the Somaliland economy. Ms. Roberts facilitated a panel discussion about this topic titled “Current Challenges and Future Solutions for Fisheries in Somaliland.” The panelists included representatives from the Ministry of Fisheries, Oxfam, Fair Fishing, GEEL (Growth, Enterprise, Employment & Livelihoods) Project, and Alla Amin fishing company. They had an interesting discussion about how the stakeholders involved in fisheries can cooperate to improve the sector.
